BaZi · beginner guide
BaZi reading starts with structure, not prediction
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, converts a birth date and local time into four stem-branch pairs. A careful reading begins with the calculated chart and keeps interpretation separate from calculation.
The four pillars and the Day Master
Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem above an Earthly Branch. The year pillar provides broad inherited and social context, the month pillar anchors season and environment, the day pillar contains the Day Master, and the hour pillar adds a later-life and expression layer when birth time is known.
The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar. It becomes the reference point for comparing the other elements, so it is more specific than a birth-year zodiac animal.
- Year: broad ancestry and social context
- Month: season, environment, and practical role
- Day: Day Master and close personal context
- Hour: expression and later-life themes when time is known
A sensible reading order
Start by confirming the birth data, timezone, and chart calculation. Then identify the Day Master and month branch, because season changes how strongly an element is expressed. Only after that should you compare visible stems, hidden stems, and the producing and controlling relationships among the Five Elements.
Role systems such as the Ten Gods translate those relationships into broad categories including resource, peer, output, wealth, and authority. They are contextual roles, not literal people or guaranteed events.
Unknown birth time and calculation limits
If the birth time is unknown, a responsible calculator should omit the hour pillar rather than substitute noon and imply false precision. Births close to midnight, timezone transitions, or traditional day boundaries also deserve care.
MingliPath records the calculation policy with the chart. The deterministic engine establishes the pillars; any AI-written interpretation receives that fixed chart as input and does not recalculate it.
Common questions
Useful answers before you continue
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. The zodiac animal is based mainly on the year branch. BaZi uses four pillars and reads the Day Master, season, elements, and relationships across the whole chart.
Can I calculate BaZi without a birth time?
Yes, but the result has three pillars instead of four. Interpretation should state the reduced timing precision clearly.
Does the AI calculate the Four Pillars?
No. MingliPath uses deterministic chart calculation first. AI interpretation receives the resulting chart and cannot alter the pillars.
